After Care For Severe Matt Removal

While every effort will be made to prevent irritation, nicks, and cuts, unfortunately these things may happen as a result of the condition of your dogs’ coat when he/she arrives for grooming. We want to make you aware of the following things:

Removal of severe matting on your dog may cause his/her skin to be irritated for a few days. This irritation may not appear for 2-3 days after grooming.

Sometimes a change in personality may occur.

Your dog may feel different after a close shave or extensive de-matting, especially if he or she is not used to this service. Dogs sometimes act depressed, embarrassed, irritable, restless, or unmotivated. They do not understand why they feel different, or their skin is irritated or itchy. If you dog has this reaction, hopefully it will only last a few hours- but we have heard a few days.

SEVERE MATT REMOVAL

Hematomas and itchy skin can result from severe matt removal.

If the ears were matted, please make sure your dog does not shake his or her head excessively due to the possibility of causing a hematoma. “By definition, a hematoma is a collection of blood outside of a blood vessel. It occurs because the wall of a blood vessel wall, artery, vein or capillary, has been damaged and blood has leaked into tissues where it does not belong. The hematoma may be tiny, with just a dot of blood or it can be large and cause significant swelling”.Medicinenet.com

Your dogs’ nails may be sharp due to being freshly trimmed and can result in self- mutilation due to scratching. Shaved skin is often itchy. We file nails when possible, but it is not always possible.

Hot spots and other irritations can appear after removing the matts.

These are the result of the skin not being able to breathe properly under the matting. The matting has often been pulling on the skin.

If the sanitary area was shaved short due to matting, it may be irritated due to urine and feces being trapped against the skin. Your dog may begin scooting on the floor or licking, further irritating the sanitary area. Also, such close clipping on a dog not used to the process can cause irritation.

Please watch your dogs carefully so that they don’t scoot, lick or scratch their skin and cause damage to themselves!

If your dog has or develops any skin or other medical issues, we urge you to seek veterinarian care as soon as possible.
